Given that Morningswood Farm is a new establishment we had the opportunity of picking a farm name, a task that both Claire and Pete were very excited to tackle. Over the settlement period many an hour was spent discussing the all important farm name but nothing felt right and once the block was ours things only ramped up spending every weekend here on the farm working and chatting but still nothing fit.
It was a few months later that Claire and Pete were talking about the first time people saw the farm and what their reactions were. We thought back to when Claire’s mum was here. No sooner had she gotten out of the car she retrieved a stick off the ground and presented Pete and Claire with a question “Do you know what this is?”, “umm, a stick?”, she scoffed at them and plainly replied, “No, its mornings wood”. Pete and Claire were nearly in tears of laughter. Claire’s mum continued “Yes, mornings wood, as a child I would have to go collect it each morning to start the fire to cook, I don’t know why you think it’s so funny”. When put that way it did conjure up idyllic, grounding images of the resourceful lifestyle that we were beginning to create.
For the next 18 months we used ‘Morningswood Farm’ while we searched for something that was ‘perfect’, something that would fit the grand plans for our 25 acre ex-pine plantation of weeds, but nothing did. So we stuck with it and here were are today.
