One of our biggest challenges here at Morningswood Farm is weeds! The three main ones that we are trying to overcome are blackberry, gorse and couch grass. So we’re trialing a few organic methods to try and help our young plants along and give them the best start we can. One of the main methods is to shade weeds out using weed matting. To pin the weed matting down we initially had to dig trenches either side of the beds, which is ok on a small scale but not when you’re staring down the barrel of 2km’s worth of trenches. So what is a savvy couple of farmers to do? Head to Youtube and then to the workshop!!
This is what our homemade weed mat layer looks like after an afternoon of tinkering with some old pipe that we scored from Pete’s dad. It still has some further adjustments needed but the time and back braking that it is saving is worth the fine tuning to get it just right.
